tianhe youth hostel | Guangzhou, China

A different social experience
Chinese lanterns were the driving concept behind this youth hostels design. Fabric facades are physically attached to the hammocks within each sleeping space. Whether or not a space is occupied and the weight of the user affect the exterior appearance of the dynamic facade of the building. An important architectural gem for an area dominated by copy and paste high density residential buildings. The hammock design saves space and re-defines low-cost accomodation.
The design for this youth hostel is located in the Tian He district of Guangzhou. Tian He directly translates to ‘Sky River’, and the public bridge space that links the high desntiy urban areas to the lake and green space was inspired by the name. The man-made river flows underneath the lantern and cuts through it much like a natural river would through rock.
