69 hampden road | Nedlands, western australia

Requiring office space, retail space and two apartments on a small site, the challenge of this project involved maximising area and providing a gateway to enter Hampden Road. This project was part of a documentation studio for the University of Western Australia in 2013 and was an seen as an introduction into how to produce contract documents.
In 2017 the project was rebuilt using Autodesk Revit and a new set of documents were created. The building was fully costed and energy analysis software assisted in testing the design.
The brief required two apartments, a retail space and three open plan offices. As the site is directly opposite from the university, the apartments were designed for students, thinking small and inexpensive but comfortable and private.
The rough exposed steel structure is softened by the timber sun screens on the South and Eastern facades. A ground floor cafe opens out onto the street allowing for greater public interaction. The sun screens are a point of intrigue in a street which otherwise has a very bland built form quality.
